Let's talk about wedding group photos. They might not be the most glamorous part of the day, but they're often some of the most treasured. Years from now, you'll be so grateful to have photographs with grandparents, siblings, parents and all the people who helped shape your story. But here's the good news. Group photos don't have to take forever.

So, How Long Should Wedding Group Photos Take?
Most couples only need around 15-30 minutes for family photographs. In fact, I usually recommend keeping things to around 10 carefully chosen combinations. This gives you beautiful wedding photographs with the people who matter most, without keeping guests away from the drinks reception for too long. The more organised the list, the quicker everything runs. And trust me, nobody wants to spend an hour standing in the sun wondering where Uncle Dave has wandered off to.
My Top 10 Tips For Stress-Free Wedding Group Photos
1. Keep Your List Short
Less really is more. Ten groups are usually plenty and can be completed in around twenty minutes.
2. Prioritise Grandparents
Older relatives often appreciate getting their photographs done first so they can relax and enjoy the celebrations.
3. Nominate A Family Helper
Every family has someone who knows everybody. Give them the job of gathering people while your photographer focuses on taking photographs. They're worth their weight in gold.
4. Have A Written List
Nobody remembers combinations when emotions are running high. A simple list keeps things moving and ensures nobody important gets forgotten.
5. Think About The Order
Start with the biggest groups and gradually remove people. It's much quicker than trying to add people back in.
6. Tell Guests In Advance
A quick announcement after the ceremony works wonders. People are much easier to find before they've disappeared to the bar.
7. Trust Your Photographer
We've done this a few times. We'll guide everyone into place and keep things moving quickly and calmly.
8. Don't Try To Photograph Everyone
A wedding with 100 guests does not need 99 group combinations. Your candid photographs throughout the day will naturally capture guests enjoying themselves.
9. Leave Time To Enjoy Your Drinks Reception
This is one of the happiest parts of the day. You don't want to spend all of it posing.
10. Remember Why You're Doing Them
Family photographs aren't about perfection. They're about preserving memories. One day, these images will become priceless.
A Little Secret…
Some of my favourite family photographs happen in between the posed moments. The laughter. The hugs. Grandad cracking jokes. Children pulling funny faces. Those tiny moments often become the photographs couples treasure most.

And Finally…
No couple has ever said to me, "I wish we'd spent longer doing group photos." But plenty have said,
"I'm so glad that was quicker than I expected." The best weddings flow naturally. And with a little planning, your family photographs can be beautiful, relaxed and finished before the champagne has even gone warm.
