What is documentary wedding photography?
Documentary wedding photography is about photographing your wedding as it really happens, rather than constantly staging moments for the camera.
Think:
Your dad trying not to cry when he sees you. Your best friend absolutely losing it during the speeches. Your grandparents dancing. The nervous look between you just before the ceremony. Your flower girl doing the exact opposite of whatever she's been asked to do. The champagne spilling. The hugs. The chaos. The tiny moments happening in the background that you didn't even know about. Those are the photographs that tell the real story of your wedding. And they're often the ones that become your favourites.
Does documentary wedding photography mean no posing?
No. And this is where my approach differs from completely hands-off documentary photography. For most of your wedding, I'll let things happen. I'm watching for moments rather than creating them. But when we head outside for your couple portraits? I'll help you. Because unless modelling happens to be your weekend hobby, being told “just act natural” while someone points a camera at you isn't particularly helpful. I'll find beautiful light, give you gentle direction and create photographs that feel effortless rather than overly posed. You won't need to know what to do with your hands. Promise.
So, what is editorial wedding photography?
Editorial wedding photography takes inspiration from fashion magazines and beautifully considered imagery. It tends to focus more on: Light. Composition. Movement. Details. And photographs that feel intentionally created. I love elements of editorial photography. I just don't believe your entire wedding needs to become an editorial photoshoot to achieve them. Can documentary and editorial wedding photography work together?
Absolutely. In fact, that's exactly how I photograph weddings. Documentary for the story. Editorial for the portraits. During your ceremony, drinks reception, speeches and dance floor, I'm predominantly documenting what's naturally happening. Then, when we have a little time together for portraits, I'll become slightly more involved. I'll look for beautiful light. Interesting architecture. Movement. Composition. And I'll gently direct you when needed. The result is a gallery that contains both: The photograph you'd happily put in a magazine. And… The photograph that makes you instantly remember exactly how your wedding felt. I don't think you should have to choose between the two.
What if we hate having our photograph taken?
Welcome. You're very much my people. Most of my couples tell me they're awkward in photographs.
And honestly? You don't need to suddenly become good at having your photograph taken just because you're getting married. A documentary approach means you're not spending the entire day conscious of the camera. You're talking. Laughing. Hugging people. Drinking champagne. Actually experiencing your wedding. And I'm photographing it while you do. When we create your portraits, I'll give you enough direction to make you feel comfortable without turning you into somebody you're not.
Will we still get family photographs?
Yes. Documentary doesn't mean I'm going to refuse to photograph your nan because it isn't candid enough. Family photographs matter. And they usually become even more important with time. We'll plan the important combinations beforehand and get through them as efficiently as possible. Then everyone can return to the considerably more important business of drinking champagne.
What does a documentary wedding photographer actually photograph?
Not just the obvious stuff. Of course I'll photograph your ceremony, confetti, portraits, speeches and first dance. But I'm also watching everything happening around those moments. Your mum's reaction while you're getting ready. Your partner waiting for you to arrive. Your friends seeing you for the first time. Someone wiping away a tear during the ceremony. Children hiding underneath tables. Your grandparents holding hands. The chaos happening on the dance floor. Because while your portraits show you what your wedding looked like, documentary photographs remind you what it felt like.

How do you choose a documentary wedding photographer in Kent?

Do we need a photographer who has worked at our Kent wedding venue before?
No. Knowing a venue can be useful, but being able to adapt is much more important. Kent weddings can mean country houses, barns, castles, hotels, churches, registry offices, restaurants or celebrations by the coast. Light changes. Weather changes. Timelines change. Weddings rarely run exactly according to plan.
Your photographer needs to be comfortable working with whatever your wedding gives them.
